Franz Josef Glacier hotels & accommodations

Franz Josef Glacier is perhaps 1 of the most isolated town along the west coast region. Like what a lot of their servers were saying 'we are in the middle of nowhere'. So don't expect to see any big chains hotel names and facilities in the area. The room size was alright and room was clean. The bed was too soft and bouncy and unfortunately, the WIFI wasn't working th...

Stayed on 9 June 2017, we had a 2 Bedroom Apt with Spa bath and 2 King Size bed. The room is new, very clean and spacious with a nice and well equip kitchen. It is the first motel you see the moment you drive into the town (can't miss it). Glacier Hot Pool is just across the street so it's very good location. Everything is within walking distance to restaurants and ...

The en-suite room has everything you need. The bed has electric blanket which is perfect during winter and the room is well heated as well. Around 10 mins walk to Franz Josef glacier. They provide delicious free soup in the evening and simple breakfast in the morning good enough to kick start your day. The pantry is spacious too.

Franz Josef Glacier is a small rustic village, kind of like a ski town without the snow. The Scenic Hotel is among the best accommodations in town (alternatives are mainly backpacker hostels, campsites, motels, etc.). Overall, the hotel is still a little rustic, but the rooms are clean & safe with modern amenities. If you're the outdoor-sy type but beyond camping, yo...

Only a one night stay to experience Franz Josef Glacier. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate and our planned activity was cancelled -- not the hotel's fault. The room was quite new & fresh. Everything worked and it was comfortable. The person who worked on the front desk was helpful suggesting places to eat (not that it was difficult, just up or down the roa...

Stayed here at the end of January 2012 and found this accommodation to be very clean, modern and enjoyed our stay. Check-in for the cottages is nearby at another motel, but only a short distance away. Staff were very friendly and helpful and eager to please. Centrally located in Franz Josef village. This motel is within walking distance to supermarket. The motel room we stayed had everything you need to self cater. They also seems to have a big communal kitchen. Plenty of washing machines and dryers as well. Overall, good, clean, convenient place. Would stay again. Very nice, friendly, and helpful staff, clean environment, and very good location if you are travelling to Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier. For a hostel like this, I think it is truly value for the money. All in all, I am satisfied with my stay at this hostel.

We arrived at 8.00pm, just before the reception closed for the night and we were really thankful to the staff for helping us connect with our car rental company. The room is well-equipped and our sleep was really comfortable. Its location next to Alice May, meant that we had a good food option. And its walking distance to the supermarket, hot pools, Franz Josef Glacie...

Perfect place to stay. The owner was friendly and he provide us with alot of informations about the franz josef and fox glaicer. He even provided us the weather forecast for the days we are there. The room was nice and cosy and had all that we needed! Great location! Staff was very friendly and helpful too. Walking distance to the town area. Facilities were clean and good. Comfortable bed in the cold weather. Although it was pouring the 2 days we were at Franz Josef, but the stay was worthwhile.

We spent new year's eve 2012 there. Though we had to get our own food from the supermarkets and cook in the kitchenette, the experience was excellent and exceeded my expectations. A pity we could not get to ride on the helicopter to go onto Franz Josef glacier as it was raining, but a good time there! Cozy town :)

Our trip in Franz Josef was dampened by a lot of rain, but the staffs at Glow Worm Cottages makes it up for it. They are very friendly, helpful and fun people to hang out with. Room was comfortable and the bathroom was clean as it was 1 bathroom for every 3 rooms. Though not the cleanest kitchen I've seen, but they were pretty decent.

We arrived at the hotel mid-afternoon and upon check-in we asked where the Glacier Hot Pools was as we wanted to go to the pools and have a massage after a trek to Franz Josef Glacier. The host was very accommodating and helped us get a late booking. We truly enjoyed our overnight stay here in Franz Josef. The hotel was close to everything with a spacious room, good fa...

Was alarming and sad to see its decline. A great walk though out to the glacier with well-marked paths.
The town is EXTREMELY small - there are basically two roads. There's nothing much to do here except go on hikes/tramps and check out the Franz Josef glacier.
FranzJosef is a small town that is situated right next to the glacier. The only activities available are adventure sports activities involving the glacier, as well as some good walks.
Easy access to the Franz Josef Glacier itself. The walk to the glacier face takes around 45 minutes and is an easy walk through the glacier valley for all but very young children, elderly or disabled.
Franz Josef is a great place if you would like to do the west-coast of south NZ and see glaciers of southern alps.
Went to see the Glacier - which is definitely worth seeing before it completely recedes and melts. We wanted to catch the glow worms but it was raining too heavily.
Great place for relaxation with hot pool and spa. Family activities such as trekking and helicopter ride available.
a city made of 2 streets. small, simply town with friendly locals. but pretty much weather-dependent to do the tour to reach the ice.
We only stayed the one day and it was pretty foggy on that occasion so we did not get to see the glacier.
Its a tourist destination. Expensive to see the glaciers...we opted to just hike but friends of ours really enjoyed taking the helicopter up and hiking in the glacier.
The breathtaking middle earth-like view at the Franz Josef Glacier trail was quite a sight for us city people.
Its a small and quiet town. But it has good scenery. In the winter time, you can walk about an hour (slow pace) and see the glacier.
We went there during Winter season so the day is short. As we were doing self-drive, it took us around 5-6 hours from Queenstown to reach there in the late afternoon.
It was a great place to base ourselves for the sightseeing aspect of the glaciers. The village was just big enough to cater for the tourist aspect.
it's a good place to stop over one or two nights. you may drive around within 50 Km to see two Glaciers --FK Glacier and Fox Glacier.
Excellent place to stay if you are going for the glacier hikes, it is a bigger town than Fox Glacier.
not sure about best time. as we went there in January and met bad weather. If weather good, 1 or 2 nights will be enough.
Love this place. Fresh air, friendly people, food & cafes are good, and lots of adventurous activities i.
This is small town and has most amenities to cater to tourists. Gas/petrol at the only fuel station is 20cents more expensive.
We were there in their winter time, which meant not too many tourists yet still quite warm to do walking tracks and kayaking.
