Chiang Mai is the capital of the north of Thailand, and it offers travelers cosmopolitan city life and rustic charms in equal doses. It serves as a last stop before embarking on jungle treks or excursions to hill-tribe villages, but it’s just as likely a place to find travelers pampering themselves at a spa, enrolling in cooking classes or shopping for handicrafts.

There are more hotels here in the city center than anywhere else in Chiang Mai. They are concentrated on the west bank of the Ping River near the Night Bazaar, and sprinkled across the cobblestone alleys of the historic walled city. Travelers find everything from well-known franchise hotels to boutique inns and guesthouses in Chiang Mai city center.

Walking tours of Chiang Mai reveal dozens of historic temples. These include Chai Mongkol, Chedi Luang and Phra Singh temples. The latter is at the far end of Sunday Walking Street, an evening pedestrian market that deals in handicrafts, clothing, accessories and artwork. It begins with a sprawling bazaar at Tha Pae Gate.

Thai and international restaurants populate the old city, while finer fusion and Western style restaurants operate inside the larger hotels in Chiang Mai city center. The local nightlife includes hip dance clubs, cozy bars and the racy Loy Khro Road.

Chiang Mai is a peaceful place to spend a few days relaxing. It operates dozens of educational institutes where travelers can pick up a new skill to take home. The Yoga Studio near Suan Buak Park is well known, as is Baan Thai Cookery School and a number of language institutes.
