We were about to get rooms in pod hotels but wanted privacy + good location, and this hotel delivered to say the least! It is very close to Chinatown MRT (5 min walk), Chinatown complex and maxwell hawker center. After booking, we were dreading that they might give us a bad room as mentioned in other reviews. But fortunately, we got the room that we saw in photos and it was quite good. It was without windows (as we had booked), but the bed was quite big with a big TV (not smart) with a huge bathroom. The staff was helpful, with daily cleaning, water bottles (2 per day), replacement of towels and bathroom supplies (dental kits, shaving kits, comb, body wash, shampoo etc). The bathroom also had almost unlimited hot water if that matters to you. If you want to stay in a great location at a budget hotel, I would 10/10 recommend this hotel.
I felt right at home in The Southbridge Hotel. Here are some things that I love and that need improvement based on my stay: I love: - the staff (front desk and cleaning fairies), who were warm and kind enough to accommodate my simple requests - the room, which wasn't as huge as others might be accustomed to but big enough for a solo traveller like me - the location, which is its biggest charm, as it was walking distance to A LOT of places--the MRT stations, hawker centers, attractions (Chinatown, Merlion Park, Clark Quay, etc.) - the price per night, which is already a steal given its location Needs to improve on: - soundproofing, I guess? the walls seem to be pretty thin that I could faintly hear the people singing on the karaoke downstairs. It didn't bother me so much, but other guests might be sensitive to this. Overall, I loved my stay here. I'm so glad I found this as it didn't appear as much as the other listings when I was looking for an accommodation. Highly recommended and will definitely book again. Thank you, TSH!
We appreciated the hotel’s location. It’s right in the heart of Chinatown. The Maxwell Food Centre (1 Kadayanallur Street) is about a 10-min walk. If you will only use the hotel as “base” for exploring the city and not expect much, then this is a reasonable choice. We hope this review will help. Pros 1. Excellent location especially if shopping and dining are among your priorities. The other Singapore spots are also near or can be easily reached by foot, bus, MRT, or taxi/Grab. 2. Bed and linens are nice. We’re not sure if all beds will have mattress toppers but the room assigned to us has a topper so it was a very nice touch. We had a really good sleep in the 2 nights that we stayed. 3. There’s a bar-restaurant at the ground floor. We didn’t eat full meals there (it was nearing closing time when we tried it). Nevertheless, what we had (fries and a Mexican dish) were really delicious. The fries were interesting—the way they did it was actually the best kind of fries we’ve eaten in a long while. 4. The building itself followed traditional architecture design—it’s a nice touch and looks good for Instagram. Cons 1. The room is small. If you are on a business trip and needs a working area, it’s better to find another hotel. You can’t open your laptop on the desk (there is no chair). There is not much space to open a large suitcase (well, you can, but on the floor, and there’s not much room to move around). I think this is really about looking into regulations, e.g., imposing a minimum size for hotel rooms especially if it is not among the cheapest around. 2. There is no separate wet and dry areas for the T&B. That means all floors will be wet after taking a bath. But we appreciated the fact that there is a anti-slipping mat—there is zero to minimal risk of slipping. 3. We requested for replenishment of our body wash on our 2nd day—they ran out of stock. This should be a non-negotiable. Hotels should always ensure 100% stock of amenities. That’s a bare minimum. 4. Check-out time is 11:00 am, not the usual 12:00 noon. It would have been better to stick to the industry’s standard of 12:00 nn. Over-all, we had a good stay especially that we were out the whole day anyway and only used the room to rest. It’s a no-frills hotel so only consider if like us, you just need a room to sleep at night and wish to experience Chinatown /CBD spots with lesser need to walk or travel far.
The Southbridge Hotel was a decent option for us as we wanted to save some money and it is important to know that it is has low frills. The staff we encountered at the reception desk were not the most attentive nor particularly friendly and their customer service skills needed some work. We hardly had a warm welcome nor got the sense that they even cared that we were there. The desk is part of the restaurant and bar that is attached to the hotel so we had to wait on 2/3 occasions for them to wrap up their work at the restaurant for them to turn around and help us. Once we were done dealing with the reception staff, the rest is fine. The room is small so make sure to review the indicated room size. There are no windows. The room's air was stale when we came back throughout the day; which eventually sorts itself out when the fan or AC is turned back on after you insert the key into the panel again. In addition, the room was always 28C when we got back, so you must run the AC to get it to a temperature you prefer when you come back. The toilet, shower, and sink are all in the same room and everything will get wet after you shower. The shower is in the middle, in front of the toilet, so if you need the toilet after, bring some indoor shower sandals so your feet don't get wet. The hotel itself is in an excellent location and it is easy to walk to several places around there or just take the MRT which is very close by. One place I enjoyed was the Lau Pa Sat food market -- it is just a few blocks southeast down Cross street headings towards Marina Bay. There was a big variety of food options and it looked like a very popular option for the office workers nearby.

When you are traveling to Singapore on a bit of a budget the most important thing to consider is to have access to public transport nearby. Southbridge hotel is excellent on that point. Two MRTs in walking distance and so many bus stops. Also chinatown has many shops for souvenirs and street food style restaurants to choose from. the evening vibe are great. But it quiets down after 10 PM. So it is an ideal location in my opinion. The rooms are spacious enough compared to the price you pay. And all the amenities you would need is provided. Just look for it in drawers and closets 🙌 The staff is really helpful. Muslim friendly toilets with hand-showers. Also a Masjid is right beside the hotel. But the in-house food is not halal. But there are couple restaurants nearby that is halal. So I definitely recommend the southbridge hotel, definitely would comeback again.
